About High Trail Natural Area

High Trail Natural Area is located in northern Colorado, spanning a section of the Routt National Forest. Characterized by steep alpine slopes, deep canyons, and dense mixed conifer forests, the area supports a variety of wildlife including elk, black bear, mountain lions, and numerous bird species. Established to preserve this high-elevation habitat, the Natural Area protects critical watersheds and fragile ecosystems. The terrain is marked by rocky outcrops, subalpine meadows, and narrow ridges that provide sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Historically, the region served as summer hunting and gathering grounds for Native American tribes before becoming a focus for environmental protection in the late 20th century. Visitors can hike rugged trails, engage in backcountry camping, and enjoy wildlife viewing. The High Trail itself is a notable route that challenges hikers with elevation gain and technical sections, rewarding them with panoramic vistas. Trout fishing is possible in the crystal-clear streams, while winter sports enthusiasts can explore snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along certain accessible routes in colder months. Its remote nature means fewer crowds, attracting trailblazers seeking solitude and natural beauty. Conservation efforts continue to address invasive species and ensure habitat preservation, maintaining the area’s wilderness character for future generations.
